I have had a recurring thought recently. What is the difference between an organization and a movement? I have witnessed over the past couple of years the dangers and pitfalls of organizational structures. It has been apparent in the church and in our world and I have grown concerned.
I believe that a movement can occur within an organization, but I believe that the more we prioritize the organization, the less we see movement. By definition, an organization sets boundaries and works within policies. That is all fine and necessary, however, there must be room for movement and innovation.
Now for us, that movement is the Holy Spirit, and the organization is the church. We certainly want to be a healthy organization and do things well and be ordered and dependable. We want to have a process whereby we make disciples and grow them into life in Christ. However, we must be very careful not to think that our processes are the only way God can work. Organizations can grow and become powerful and do great things. When those organizations allow for the work and leading of the Holy Spirit, they have the potential to never stop growing and never stop making and impact.
I believe that the Holy Spirit is always moving and forever beckoning us to grow and see more. I want desperately to be a part of that movement. I want to be a good steward of that movement and create an organization that is healthy and creative. The trick is to keep the organization serving the movement and not the other way around.
I believe that when the church collective gets this in proper order, we will begin to see revival in whatever way God wants to bring it. To think that we can figure Him out to the degree that we build a box for Him is futile thinking and will always leave us wanting.
Let’s seek to be a Movement for God by allowing the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us. Let’s make sure that His is the final word and He is the leadership that we seek and follow.
I cannot wait to see where this leads!!
In Him,
Pastor Scott
