The only power sin has over us is the power we give it! In His death and resurrection Jesus defeated sin and death, and through His Spirit gives us authority over it as well. So, why do we struggle so much with sin and the effects of sin in our lives?
We live in a world that still feels the effects of the brokenness that came when sin entered our world. Because of that, we are constantly faced with the battle that ensues over flesh and spirit. God calls out to us to be set apart from the world, or holy. Our daily goal is to do just that, but we find our wants and needs to be very powerful forces.
Knowing these things, it really comes down to which part of us we are going to feed. Our spirit or our flesh. We live in a culture that tells us to love ourselves, be who we are, and hands out affirmation for just about anything. But we are not called to align with our culture. We are Kingdom people. Choosing to be loyal to that Kingdom means growing closer and closer to our King, and thereby growing in our desires to please Him and live out our lives to honor Him.
It is in this mindset, and heart space, that we find the authority to overcome sin and the world’s influence. If we as Kingdom people choose to entertain or allow sin to remain in our lives, then we are going to struggle when it comes to hearing God and realizing His power. However, if we allow ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit and reject those things that don’t line up with His will for our lives, then we find breakthroughs and power in our daily lives.
I do not know if it is possible to be perfect in this life and my goal here is not to suggest that we do or will. What I am saying is that when we seek after Him more than ourselves, we will find the power to break any sin and its power over us. You never know what seemingly small thing is holding you back from God’s revelation for your life.
